clericbob I joined the listening party for this album purely on a whim, and I think it's been all I've listened to over the past week. There are so many absolute bangers from this year's jam - I may have favorites, and I may not 'get' every song, but there's undeniable talent in each and every track on here. Kudos to the production and mixing as well for fitting together so many disparate styles and genres in one album. Can't wait for the next jam! Favorite track: Archival Permanence (by amadis).

lvhg this album was so good and so many of these songs hit hard. I don’t even now how to pick a favorite but I picked Polaris because I’ve listened to it the most, but the runners up are archival permanence and infinite spacetime Favorite track: polaris (by zack.ry).

this is art. you will hear a buzzer. when you hear the buzzer, stare at the art. it's all just yellow, cherry, orange paint to me a bunch of zany pictures from tv this frog just won a thousand bucks he put a bowtie on that duck i need someone to tell me what i see you gotta read between the lines of what the artist had in mind maybe it's hard to tell but if you turn it all around, flip it upside down a new perspective to find gotta make the meaning by yourself i need to grasp the abstract, make it something real cast it in concrete 'till it cracks why are all the curtains blue? why am i afraid of you? i need you to tell me what i feel you gotta read between the lines of what the artist had in mind maybe it's hard to tell but if you turn it all around, flip it upside down a new perspective to find gotta make the meaning by yourself how am i supposed to feel? is my heart supposed to flutter? like i'm staring through the window but you're closing all the shutters how am i supposed to feel? (apples, oranges, pears, plums) is my heart supposed to flutter? (kumquats, tangerines, lemons, limes) like i'm staring through the window (avocado, tomato, banana, papaya) but you're closing off (william shakespeare did not exist) closing off (this situation is hopeless) you gotta read between the lines of what the artist had in mind maybe it's hard to tell but if you turn it all around, flip it upside down a new perspective to find gotta make the meaning by yourself you should now feel mentally reinvigorated. if you suspect staring at art has not provided the required intellectual sustenence, reflect briefly on this classical music: [EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZ-

I got a sparkling pink heart, wear it like a trademark, it's hangin' on my sleeve 'til I give it away My sweet little pink heart might just be my best part wholly undefeated, it keeps beating in a hundred and one ways, a thumbs-up for a rainy day, now, a warm hug when you're feelin' down , If I see you, I'll be waving, if you're sobbing, I'll be waiting, so you better come around, I'll turn your whole world upside-down Everything started with a bottle of ink, Could have been anything, but had to be pink Stood there for hours with my head in the sink Saw my reflection and her smile started makin' me think how could Loreal and Garnier wash all of my pain away? what if this was every day? what if I could stay like this forever and endeavor to be better to myself, to show that girl the kindness I give everybody else? My pink heart went off like a jump-start she smacked me with compassion like a slap in the face my sweet cherry pink heart just gave me a fresh start without her I'm depleted, uncompleted in a hundred and one ways, a thumbs-up for a rainy day, now, a warm hug when you're feelin' down , If we see you, we'll be waving, if you're sobbing, we'll be waiting, so you better come around, we'll turn your whole world upside-down

went out today the sky reflected red atop the oceans wake forgot the way the sun turns words i say to smoke and flame and I’ll feel much better when I start to see the mountains I’m climbing leaving me and I’ll feel much better when i stop to breathe feel wind twisting through fingers watch moving trees stayed in today haven’t really left since last holiday dawns’s embrace light’s behind the door seep around the frame and I’ll feel much better when I start to see the mountains I’m climbing leaving me and I’ll feel much better when i stop to breathe feel wind twisting through fingers watch moving trees I‘ll wash away orange tinted walls, dance inside my brain novocaine mix to greener hues, live another day (and I’ll feel much better then)

She drinks just like a sailor She’s selfish, she’s a miser You ask her three ex-husbands They tell you they despise her She shifts her eyes from side to side and makes a funny face at you She says: “you can’t hate me; Not unless you love me too” You feel the teacup shatter As she throws it at your head She speculates if anyone Would care if she were dead She cries and rolls her eyes And kisses you and says “you’re lovely dear” And that should be the end of it But she’s being so sincere You’re headed for the exit She demands you stick around You turn around like Orpheus She’s nowhere to be found You close your eyes and calm yourself And wonder “why’d she bail?” It doesn’t really hurt right now But you know it’s in the mail (edited)

down here on earth we follow stars and i don’t know where you are but if you go north you just might make it home steer towards the sun doesn’t really matter which one when everything around is dark maybe just one truth is enough i hope this finds you well and you’re not up there just for us you’re worth the world and more you’ve got forever in store and i may not know your name but i think you can show us both the way home your arc streaks wide it’s big enough to catch the whole sky but when what you see is what you can believe what happens when the nothing meets your eye i know you’re built to last but there’s no pure virtue in that what matters is you are even out among the stars i may not know your face but i think you can point us both the way home not everything that is is made for anything but doesn’t that just make life all the more worth living if we can shape and name the stars there’s really no telling how far we may make our way home down here on earth i’ll follow you i don’t know if you’re a star or just something kinda blue but think you can lead us both home i think that we can make somewhere home

Snow blind Starry eyes Cold horizon Even colder sky Drinking in a deeper shade of blue Take it with you Well meaning Hopeful lies Dreams of all we could become Given the time Turn toward a day devoid of grief I'll take it with me Watch me rise 'Til the edge of the earth erases me from your sight And all we left behind disappears from view Carry me with you

Oh hello and thanks for coming It’s strange to see you grown up What are you reading? Social Psychology? What are you going to do with that? Don’t give me the pitch, you should’ve just walked through the door And asked for it The only way you’ll learn is through doing the fucking job That’s not real, it’s an old boy’s club whilst on the other side They’re put there by the bankers and elites There’s the big world and the small world, and they sorta coexist, as a giant fuck-off coin floating around in the abyss Oh wouldn’t you know, oh wouldn’t you know, the world was flat after all Tell me what you’ll do If you were given the reins And you’ll find I decide whether or not you’re right It’s been tried before So don’t you give me that lip The experiment concluded before you’d even had a sip I worked for it I never begged for it I walked in And I sat him down A handshake and suit can do a lot you know Get that dye out of your hair and maybe you could grow Sorry about that, it’s just that I used to believe And then they held us all to ransom What are we all meant to do without their privilege Thankfully they came in and crushed em And let us all go free Though to this day if I hear a short a I soil myself If you want to settle down, maybe vote for something skinny There’s heaps of land, and you all work remote Just get away from here, the council don’t know what they’re doing If houses look like this, why are there junkies on the street But people want them here, people want them here, so the tape stays in the way Tell me what you’ll do If you were given the reins And you’ll find I decide whether or not you’re right It’s been tried before So don’t you give me that lip The experiment concluded before you’d even had a sip I worked for it I never begged for it I walked in And I sat her down It’d help to have a bird and split with her Then again, you don’t look like you would want that So tell me what you would do instead Tell me how you’d save our necks If the world is crumbling Why are we all ignorant? Tell me what you’ll do If you were given the reins And you’ll find I decide whether or not you’re right It’s been tried before So don’t you give me that lip The experiment concluded before you’d even had a sip I worked for it I never begged for it I walked in And I sat him down I asked him if he’d heard what you’d been doing And that I couldn’t believe that my family raised a poof

Whiskey in the bottle Whiskey in the jar Whiskey is an easy out If you aren't going far Pour another tumbler Down another drink The ache of life ain't quite as sharp When you're too drunk to think Whiskey in the bottle Whiskey in the jar Whiskey melt the mask away And show us who we are Whiskey in the belly Whiskey on your breath Whiskey shots it’s bottoms up Let's drink ourselves to death Coffee is for closers Champaign’s for the rich But whiskey doesn’t give a shit If you’re a surly bitch Poison in small doses Acts like medicine A balm to compliment the pills That make me feminine Whiskey in the bottle Whiskey in the jar Whiskey melt the mask away And show us who we are Whiskey in the bottle Whiskey in the jar Whiskey melt the mask away And show us who you are Whiskey in your belly Whiskey on your breath Whiskey shots it’s bottoms up Let's drink ourselves to death

It's time I got back on the road again, Packed my suitcase and charged my phone Harden my heart and double-tie my shoelaces And head out west to the coast alone I'm moving over the mountains Kicked around like a tin can Don't even have the time to phone in my shorthand Wished I could make the rounds and say goodbyes and au revoirs But my philodendron's wilting in the car, So I'll fax them in This freedom sometimes feels like a mistake, A blessing and a curse, Like winning the grand prize in the sweepstakes And receiving a casket and a hearse I'm moving over the mountains Kicked around like a tin can Don't even have the time to phone in my shorthand Wished I could make the rounds and say goodbyes and au revoirs But my philodendron's wilting in the car, So I'll fax them in

Grey, fingered with flickering threads of light; Silence broken by restless quavers of music. Greyness, music, A playing thought of slumber. And on my lips faintly disturbing fingers, And at my heart love’s hand like a child’s hand Stirring me half awake.

Few, maybe very few, will understand what it is that we did here Our screens and their meanings aren't exactly crystal clear Some things will always end up buried where secrets go: In the back of a busted worn out truck to a landfill deep in New Mexico This is only one of several recordings Take it as instruction a lesson a warning Work all night into the morning Recreate the meaning in the performing Press play Let yourself get carried away Circulate the tapes Whatever it takes Don't let what we did here be erased Keep it safe Keep it What you are seeing Isn't exactly what we made What you are hearing Isn't exactly what we played Even a body of work Must eventually decay It's in the act of perceiving that we interpolate They will tell you It's better left forgotten - They're wrong Hundreds of names in the credits Hundreds of hours gone Two hundred sixteen thirty five millimeter slides on the wall 20+ band members Twenty times as many songs Pick one Wait for the click and the hum Circulate the tapes! Circulate the zines Even if no one remains that remembers what they mean Circulate the tapes Whatever it takes Don't let what we did here be erased (Don't let us be erased) Keep it safe Keep it Can you still see me? How much of my meaning has been retraced? All these images replaced by a single static screen Buy the name, kill the process Then write it all off, lest we let it exist Tell me how can all of this be better left unseen? There's always gonna be dark spots in our history, so some one’s got to save the things they think that no one wants to see Maybe sooner or later all we made will have faded all it's architects long gone So take a copy and pass it on

I am of the opinion that people can change But it feels like I’m the only one who thinks that way Come into your own, shed the dead skin away To get chained by what you used to be I am waiting for rulebooks to come in the mail But till then I’ll look back at all of my fails Stare in the mirror, wish for someone but me Regret hits like a wave in the small of my back Oh I have put myself under attack I’ve been pensive for so long Trying to figure out how I’m wrong Saying sorry for everything And nothing at all I am drowning under eyes That I cannot even see But I’m tired of pretending This is how I’m meant to be I’m of the opinion the past’s in the past But people keep saying this freedom won’t last “You’re just running away, you still haven’t changed” So why do I keep crying over everything I’ve done? I am stuck in a loop of hating myself Looking over my shoulder to see if you can tell Every word that I say drives me straight into hell Fall back on old habits and run into the wall again Oh I am at my wits end I’ve been pensive for so long Trying to figure out how I’m wrong Saying sorry for everything And nothing at all I am drowning under eyes That I cannot even see But I’m tired of pretending This is how I’m meant to be I acknowledge I’m an asshole In the natural state of things I have attempted to change for the better To avoid the pain that I bring But it feels like I’m still in high school Like time’s a flat fucking circle Like nothing I do will be good enough For the people I love So can someone redeem me? Make into a martyr Tell ‘em “this is what happens When you go looking for answers” Was I aggressive? Too obsessive? Too wild? Way too much? This is every single thought I have; a constant sucker punch… I am of the opinion that people can change If only they learned how to communicate I cannot get anywhere while your mouth is shut So just tell me what can I do to make it up I have been pensive for so long Trying to figure out how I’m wrong Saying sorry for everything And nothing at all I am drowning under eyes That I cannot even see But I’m tired of pretending This is how I’m meant to be

But now I think that if you cared You’d let me know you want me, not just sit | and | stare I’ve never been sure if I can be allowed In your eternal fan club, I’ve been scared ‘Til now You won’t be the one to make me fade away This spite of you’s the reason I will stay Watch me run And glow Watch me as I find my way home

In a world of black and white A little color in the trees And a fresh blanket of snowfall so bright Against the darkness of the breeze But by chance there was something in the distance Something brand new And I guess somebody above came to my assistance When my compass led to you I was moving without direction Sacred and profane Loving without affection But you set my heart aflame You were wearing yellow Against cherry red And a splash of orange color on your lips Feathers on your head But then you flew off before I could meet you I guess I was too surprised to follow through But that’s alright because I know I’m going to see you again My compass always points to you I wanted hear you sing Whatever song that may be So I kept singing hymns to you Until your compass led to me You looked in my direction As I looked away But I felt the connection And we both decided to stay You were wearing yellow Against cherry red And a splash of orange color on your lips Feathers on your head

When they look back here at us as humanity, what will they see? Will they see each of us as individuals, will they see us for who we think we are? Or will they see something else. I don't want to be remembered as a small blip in the expanse of spacetime. I think deep down, you don't want to be either. I think that you want to be big, I think that you want the eons to remember who you are, who you have been, and who you always will be.. I know because it's what I want too. It's only natural.. existence is fleeting and so am I.. but that's the beauty of it. We get to make it whatever we want. I hope you remember that, and don't forget: I'm with you, always, there in the dark

ABOUT THE SONG JAM:

The Fourth Strike song jam came back for its third year, with a slew of new prompts and new faces to match! If you’ve heard our 2021 or 2022 albums, you know the drill: Four weeks. Four prompts. A whole lot of new music. This year, we also debuted some bonus prompts, swapping out the title guidelines of previous jams for some complementary technical restrictions.

The resulting songs ran the gamut of possible descriptors. Weird and wonderful shared space with soft and somber. Bite-size pink shiny pop jutted up alongside 28-minute contemplative epics. With the veritable toybox of music we present to you here, it’s safe to say the third Fourth Strike annual song jam was a resounding success. But don’t take our word for it. The proof’s here in this compilation album.

THE 2023 CHALLENGES:

Week 1: "Phone It In"
CHALLENGE: The title of your song must be the name of one of your "most used" emojis
BONUS: Oops, your phone is running out of storage. Better make the song shorter than 1m 59s!

Week 2: "Art Heist"
CHALLENGE: For this week's inspiration, we're breaking into a modern art gallery. Your inspiration are the two pieces of artwork below - feel free to take inspiration from one or both of them however you like!
Yellow, Cherry, Orange by Mark Rothko
Surrealism on TV by Robert Heinecken
BONUS: Good artists copy, great artists steal. Incorporate one or both of our "Bonus Sample" audio files—to be edited, sampled, or rerecorded however you like. (Listeners, can you figure out the samples?)

Week 3: "I Like Your Style"
CHALLENGE: Hey new friend! Collaborate with someone you haven't collaborated before.
BONUS: Make your song "in the style of" another artist - a fellow jammer, a famous musical act, your mate jim, anyone!

Week 4: "Golden Record"
CHALLENGE: There is an alien, somewhere. Or an astronaut, waiting. You'll never reach them, but you could broadcast. We're making a new Golden Record. What are you going to send?
BONUS: The space boffins really don't want to waste any space on this disc - make it as long as you like, but make it count! Your song must be through-composed (no repeated sections).
BONUS BONUS: Humanity is at its best when we work together: have each track or instrument performed/recorded/made by a separate person.
